In Akibaranger, the catchphrase is 痛さは強さ, which TVN translated is “Pain Is Power!”, but this is completely wrong. 痛さ is short for 痛々しさ, which means shameful, not pain. It’s shameful to be an otaku, not painful!
This is indeed true! This came in as a submission and I had to go on a trek to verify it, because other subbers apparently translated it in the same way. I had to ask my other translator friend, who found that the original writer had intended it that way.
But contextually speaking, it’s clear from the opening that they were going for itai as not pain but painfully embarrassing. When used to refer to another person, it means shameful or humiliating. Thanks, submitter!
